CANTON – Firefighters rescued a man whose pickup drove off Interstate 77 northbound and was submerged upside down in the West Branch of Nimishillen Creek on Aug. 3.
The man, who was unconscious and not breathing when firefighters pulled him out of the trapped vehicle, was in critical condition at Aultman Hospital the night of Aug. 3.
A Canton Fire Department news release said authorities received a call about the crash at 6:31 p.m. and that Bolivar Fire & Rescue was first at the scene and assisted. Firefighters performed resuscitative measures before the man was taken to the hospital.
The victim's name wasn't provided in the news release.
Ohio Department of Transportation traffic video released by the Fire Department shows the vehicle heading northbound and traveling through the median, across the southbound lanes and splashing into the creek.
The Stark County Hazardous Materials Response Team responded to contain fluids leaking from the vehicle.
The incident remains under investigation.
