A heat advisory is in effect for much of Massachusetts, with temperatures and humidity expected to surge to dangerous levels on Thursday.
The advisory is in effect for central, eastern, northeastern, southeastern, and western Massachusetts from 11 a.m. Thursday through 8 p.m. on Friday.
The National Weather Service warned that hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Heat index values up to 99 degrees are expected.
"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances," the NWS wrote in its advisory.
The NWS added, "Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the OccupationalSafety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequentrest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911."
Boston 25 Meteorologist Vicki Graf said the region is in for a potential heatwave over the next few days, with the chance of isolated thunderstorms leading into the weekend.
