A Palm Beach County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man during a welfare check Wednesday night. Officials did not immediately name the man killed nor the deputy who killed him.
Agency spokesperson Teri Barbera said deputies arrived at a home in unincorporated West Palm Beach shortly after 8 p.m. and found a knife-wielding man fighting with his mother and father. Deputies say the man ignored their orders to drop the kitchen knife, prompting one to fire a Taser.
Still, Barbera said, the man did not drop the knife.
A deputy then shot the man in the chest. Deputies performed first aid until Palm Beach County Fire Rescue arrived. Paramedics took the man to a hospital, where he died.
Barbera said the deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office and PBSO's Violent Crimes Division investigate.
