Before they close Dalys Jett's casket Saturday, his family has one hope: to view the body camera footage of his last moments alive.
Jett was shot and killed about 10:15 p.m. on July 22 in the 8000 block of East 37th Street after Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers received reports of a disturbance. He was 21. After officers arrived at the scene, Jett fired shots at the officers, and three officers returned fire, according to an IMPD new release issued shortly after the shooting. Two officers were shot.
In the weeks since Jett's death, his family has demanded in public statements and private meetings with IMPD to see the unredacted body camera footage. But progress stalled, the family said.
At the Hovey Street Church of Christ in Indianapolis, his family held a candlelight vigil for Jett on Aug. 7. His father, Derrick Jett, stood in front of about two dozen family members and supporters. He had a short speech.
"We just want to see what happened to our son," Derrick Jett said.
Jett was a college athlete at home for summer break, according to his brother. His family said his life was full of promise, and they're struggling to understand what led up to the shooting, especially as more facts about that night emerge.
"This is not a game," Davanta Scruggs said. "We demand transparency. For the IMPD to not give us that, leaves us with a lot of questions."
