More than 200 people have been evacuated due to a major wildfire near Lake Garda in northern Italy, including scores of holidaymakers, firefighters said on Saturday.
The fire is burning in the municipality of Tignale on the western shore of Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake and one of the country's most popular tourist destinations.
Several dozen tourists staying at a holiday resort were evacuated as a precaution, along with residents of several holiday homes.
The wildfire spread rapidly through the mountains above the lakeshore on Friday evening and overnight, according to the fire service.
Numerous emergency crews were still battling to bring the blaze under control on Saturday morning, so far without success.
"Efforts are currently focused on containing the fire fronts and protecting several residential buildings," the fire service said.
Firefighting aircraft and helicopters have been deployed.
Italy has been suffering from a heatwave for weeks, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some areas.
Red alerts due to the health risks posed by extreme heat are currently in place in nearly all of the country's major cities, while water levels on the Po, Italy's longest river, have fallen sharply.
The high temperatures are expected to persist until the middle of the month.
