Springfield police arrested a man accused of murder Aug. 7 that officers believe was also the perpetrator of a hit-and-run that killed a 73-year-old man the previous day.
Police received a report of a stabbing at the 2800 block of Gateway Street at 2 p.m. Aug. 7.
Officers found a victim at the scene and rendered aid until medics could arrive. The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and died there.
Witnesses told police the stabbing suspect left in a white 2011 Nissan Murano. One witness followed the vehicle and gave officers real-time information about its location. Police arrested the man after he parked the SUV and stood outside it.
The suspect was charged with second-degree murder and taken to the Lane County Jail. He has not been arraigned.
Officers noticed the Nissan's body had damage that resembled that found in photos of the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run incident that killed Randall Alan Fultz at the intersection of Sixth and G streets and hospitalized his wife Pamela the previous day.
The Nissan driver was traveling north on Sixth Street when he struck Randall and Pamela, continued through the intersection with G Street where he collided with a Prius. The Nissan driver made a U-turn and drove back south on Sixth, hitting the Fultzes again, police said.
Randall was declared dead at the scene. Pamela was taken to a nearby hospital.
