Newbury firefighters responded to two emergency calls within minutes of each other Saturday morning, including a serious bicycle crash involving a participant in a race passing through town.
According to the Newbury Fire Department, crews were dispatched at approximately 10:58 AM to the area of Coleman Road and Elm Street for a reported bicycle crash.
When firefighters arrived, they found a bicyclist had struck a guardrail and been thrown from the bike into a wooded area.
Due to the severity of the rider's injuries, crews requested a MedFlight helicopter, which transported the rider to Anna Jaques Hospital. Elm Street was temporarily closed while emergency crews worked to rescue the rider from the woods.
Just minutes later, at approximately 11:15 AM, firefighters were called to assist Massachusetts State Police with a medical emergency on I95 North near Exit 81.
Because Newbury crews were already handling the bicycle crash, Georgetown and Atlantic ambulances were requested to assist with the highway medical call. The victim was also transported to Anna Jaques Hospital.
While the injured bicyclist was being transported, a Newbury fire engine and ambulance were redirected to I-95 to assist Georgetown crews.
The Newbury Police Department assisted with traffic control and the crash investigation on Elm Street, while the Rowley Fire Department helped establish the MedFlight landing zone.
No additional information about the bicyclist's condition or the nature of the medical emergency on I-95 was immediately available.
