Thomas David Ryan has been taken into custody, ending a multi-day manhunt stemming from a homicide in Orange County, New York State Police announced.

The active search for Ryan in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County has concluded. Police had previously warned that Ryan should be considered armed and dangerous and urged the public not to approach him.

The homicide occurred Aug. 6 at a residence on Greenville Turnpike in the town of Greenville, Orange County.

After State Police responded to a reported structure fire at the residence, investigators found a deceased man inside. Police determined the fire had been deliberately set and began investigating the death as a homicide.

The victim was later identified as Robert Ryan, 70, Thomas Ryan's father.

Police said Thomas Ryan did not live with his father at the time of the incident and had no other known current ties to the Greenville community.

Investigators said Ryan had lived a transient lifestyle and stayed at numerous shelters throughout New York. Police followed up on those locations as they investigated tips and reported sightings.

Investigators also determined Ryan fled the area in his father's gray 2016 Toyota Prius with New York license plate HNH-7671. Police said Ryan was known to travel by train and coordinated with rail transportation partners during the search.

The investigation involved State Police Troop F's Bureau of Criminal Investigation and multiple specialized units, along with local, county and federal law enforcement agencies.

State Police had asked residents and business owners in the Greenville area to review surveillance footage from the evening of Aug. 6 through the overnight hours as investigators worked to reconstruct Ryan's movements.

State Police announced that Ryan was taken into custody after an active search in the Gilboa area of Schoharie County.

Additional information about Ryan's arrest and the homicide investigation will be released when available, troopers said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
