Fire departments visiting Somerset County for the 133rd annual Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Convention formed a procession on Aug. 7, from Somerset to the Flight 93 National Memorial in Stoystown.

The procession, a solemn ceremonial event to honor firefighters and first responders, started at 5:30 p.m. from 340 W. Union St., Somerset Regional Volunteer Fire Department headquarters and host of the event, and moved on a preplanned route to the memorial.

Waiting patiently with several community members for the procession to start were Michelle and Tyler Judy of Rockwood who brought their daughters Lily, 1, and Kylee, 4, to watch the firemens' procession depart.

"It is very nice way to celebrate the country's 250th anniversary," Tyler said. "I've loved watching firetrucks since I was a little boy."

Husband and wife said they both "love parades."

"It is great fun," Michelle said. "The kids get to see the firetrucks and it is exciting for them."

At the memorial, a first responders' ceremony of remembrance was held at the Wall of Names to honor the 343 firefighters who died 25 years ago during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and those in the fire service who have died since then.

The Western Pennsylvania Firemen's Association organizes the annual convention to bring together firefighters and fire service members from across the region for meetings, competitions and fellowship, according to its website.
