As University of Alabama students and family begin to fill city and campus streets, there's good news, and other news, about Greensboro Avenue, the main north-south artery in downtown Tuscaloosa.

Greensboro Avenue begins at the Black Warrior River, near Hotel Indigo, the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater, and the under-construction Saban Center, then runs more than six miles through downtown until connecting with U.S. Highway 82.

But the $4.3 million Greensboro Avenue improvement project, funded by Elevate Tuscaloosa, affects just two downtown blocks, from University Boulevard to Seventh Street.

The work is intended to beautify through streetscaping and landscaping, and strengthen pedestrian access through wider sidewalks, with added safety features. The construction will also create dedicated delivery zones between University and Seventh.

Work began May 4, with the project goal of completion before UA's home football opener, when the Crimson Tide hosts East Carolina Sept. 5 at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Single lanes have been kept open as the spring and summer work rolls on. Some parking spaces are blocked, and those wishing to drive through should allow extra travel time and follow rerouting and safety signs.

The latest update from the city of Tuscaloosa on Aug. 7 said that phases 1, 2, 3 and 4 are mostly complete. For phases 5 and 6, demolition and utility work are complete. Sidewalk and roadway work in 5 and 6 are nearing completion.

Southbound lanes, sidewalk and adjacent bay parking in phases 5 and 6 will be reopened no later than Monday, Aug. 10. Landscaping work on the east side will begin Aug. 10, as will work on phases 7 and 8.

Beginning Aug. 10, the southbound lane of Greensboro Avenue, from Seventh to Gary Fitts Street (Sixth Street) will be closed. The majority of that sidewalk corridor, along the west side of Greensboro Avenue, will remain open.
