Chinese automotive parts supplier BWI Group has started operations at a new Brazil research and development (R&D) facility, extending its network into South America.
The centre adds to BWI Group's existing R&D operations in China, Europe and North America.
Based in the São Paulo region, the Brazil facility will concentrate on brake-by-wire technology, with responsibilities spanning product development, platform localisation and technical support for customers in the South American market.
The new centre is set to operate in coordination with BWI Group's two North American R&D sites and a manufacturing plant in the region, as the company looks to back automakers extending their programmes into South America.
Among the technologies heading to the region is BWI Group's ninth-generation electronic stability control system, which is currently in mass production across several sites worldwide and will reach South America for the first time this year.
The company's iDBC1 integrated brake-by-wire system, known as 1-Box, is also being added to the South American roadmap.
That system began mass production in China in 2025 before scaling up to mass production in Europe as well.
BWI Group's foundation brake business, which includes integrated electric parking brake systems and calipers, is likewise being extended into new international markets.
According to the company, technical support delivered locally through the Brazil centre will be paired with its broader service capabilities as the facility builds up its activities, with automakers moving into new markets named as a focus of this work.
The Brazil launch follows other recent product developments at the company.
In February, BWI Group brought out an automated active roll-control solution, updating its semi-active roll control system with an "automatic mode" that lets the anti-roll bar disengage and re-engage as required, including while the vehicle is in motion.
In April, the company expanded production capacity for its fourth-generation magneto-rheological dampers, adding 600,000 units a year. That increase is intended to make the MagneRide suspension system available for around two million vehicles over the coming years.
