A flight operated by Lufthansa subsidiary Swiss and bound for Boston made an unscheduled landing in Dublin early on Monday after smoke was emitted from an electronic device, the airline reported.
It was the second such incident within two weeks. In both cases, electronic devices were the cause - devices that, according to the airline, have not been permitted for use on board throughout the Lufthansa Group since the beginning of the year.
The aircraft, which took off from Zurich on Sunday evening, landed in Dublin in the early hours of the Monday morning. "The reason was smoke developing on board, caused by a power bank," Swiss said.
In these cases, an emergency signal is sent to gain landing priority, but this does not constitute an emergency landing. The 206 passengers were taken to hotels while the airline arranged onward travel, it said.
On July 27, a Swiss flight from Zurich to New York made an unscheduled landing in Bangor, in the US state of Maine, because of smoke in the cabin. The cause was a charging case for headphones that had fallen between the seats, where it became trapped and was damaged.
Since January, power banks have not been permitted to be used or charged on board any airline within the Lufthansa Group.
They may be carried in hand luggage, but must be kept on the passenger's person, in the seat pocket, or under the seat and not in the overhead luggage compartment.
