VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia Beach City Council could vote Tuesday to sell Virginia Beach National Golf Club and kick-off a public-private partnership to redevelop the land.
A public hearing is slated to begin at 6 p.m. at City Hall regarding the proposal that involves transferring the 300 acre 18-hole course, as well as roughly 50-additional acres of city farmland, to a group led by the Virginia Beach-based Dragas Companies.
While Dragas will pay $17.9 million for the property that sits just north of the Virginia Beach Municipal Center along Princess Anne Road, the city will, in turn, give the money back to Dragas, along with $1.8 million from the Virginia Beach Development Authority, to go toward an estimated $38 million golf course redevelopment.
Under the direction of golf course architect Timothy Liddy, eight holes would be relocated and redesigned to help make way for 660 housing units developed on the southern portion of the property.
Dragas also plans to build a new childcare center, and the city will set aside up to nearly $8 million in public infrastructure along Tournament Drive and Princess Anne Road, to include turn lanes, streetscape improvements, utility relocations and a sewer extension.

While the developer touts the potential success of the plan, some golfers and residents have taken issue with process. And though a request for an emergency injunction was filed to try and stop the vote, a federal judge denied the motion.
