A 52-year-old Titusville man was arrested after police said he was driving while impaired when he struck a child on a bicycle Tuesday, July 28.

Eric Blythe was charged with driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury and DUI refusal to submit shortly after Titusville police were called to investigate the Tuesday night crash.

He was booked into the Brevard County Jail Complex., where he was held on a $15,500 bond, jail records show.

The incident happened as Blythe traveled southbound on south Hopkins Avenue and struck the bicyclist. Police said the unidentified juvenile, who was not wearing a helmet, rolled into the roadway and was knocked into the vehicle's windshield, police reported.

The child was taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando with serious injuries. He was listed in serious condition.

Police said Blythe had several signs of impairment.

"Choosing to drive impaired is a decision that can change lives forever in a matter of seconds," said Interim Titusville Police Chief Tyler Wright. "No destination, celebration, or convenience is worth risking the life of a child or anyone else on our roadways."
