A Raleigh woman accused of performing orthodontic work without a professional license is now facing an additional criminal charge.
Ebony McBean is now facing five criminal charges, including a newly added charge of obtaining property by false pretenses. That charge is in addition to three existing counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and one count of practicing medicine without a license.
According to court records, McBean presented herself as a licensed orthodontist and charged one victim more than $2,800 for orthodontic work she was not licensed to perform.
The new charge comes after an ABC11 Troubleshooter investigation that began after several former patients contacted ABC11 about McBean's Raleigh business, The Smiling Face Company.
Those patients said McBean shut down the business, leaving some of them with braces still on their teeth and thousands of dollars already paid for treatment.
According to arrest warrants, McBean allegedly took thousands of dollars from patients for fraudulent dental services. The warrants also allege McBean practiced medicine without obtaining a medical license from the North Carolina Medical Board.
During our original investigation, McBean acknowledged she was not licensed to perform the orthodontic work. However, she told ABC11 that a licensed doctor was always overseeing the treatment.
McBean is scheduled to appear back in court later this month.
