Two Detroit Free Press journalists won an Edward R. Murrow Award for chronicling the changing cultures and communities packed within Hamtramck's two square miles.
Columnist John Carlisle and photojournalist Ryan Garza received the award in the Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion category for large digital organizations for "Two Square Miles: The Evolution of Hamtramck."
The five-part project examines how Hamtramck, a small city surrounded by Detroit, has evolved through successive waves of immigration.

Carlisle and Garza spent nearly a year documenting Hamtramck's communities. Told through five stories and dozens of photographs, the project examines how longtime residents and newcomers live together, preserve their cultures and shape the city's identity.
