The German embassy in Kiev on Friday tightened its travel warning for German nationals in Ukraine, cautioning against rail travel ahead of the country's Independence Day on August 24.
In an email, the embassy said that increased attacks on energy infrastructure and transport hubs could not be ruled out in connection with Ukraine's Independence Day.
"Ukrainian railway infrastructure and rail operations themselves continue to be the target of Russian airstrikes," the embassy said.
Russian forces have in recent weeks attacked not only railway stations but also moving trains from the air. Near Odessa, a train driver and his assistant were killed on Thursday when their passenger train was struck.
A general travel warning for the whole of Ukraine, issued by the German Foreign Office due to the Russian invasion, remains in effect.
In Kiev, meanwhile, Germany's new ambassador to Ukraine, Boris Ruge, has taken up his post, succeeding Heiko Thoms, the embassy announced on X.
