WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Drivers in western Sedgwick County are experiencing increased traffic and longer backups along U.S. Highway 54 as the area has seen significant growth in recent years.
As more people live and work in western Sedgwick County, drivers say rush hour can mean extensive delays, especially around 119th and 135th streets.
Wichita resident Jennifer Wiens has watched the area change over the last several years.

"As Wichita expands, I feel like the congestion has definitely gotten worse," she said.
Wiens said the worst times are during the morning and evening commutes, and a crash can create even longer delays.
"If I tried to come home at 5 o'clock and was stuck in a wreck, you'll sit there sometimes for up to 30 minutes," she said.
According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, traffic data from 2024 shows about 34,600 vehicles travel this section of U.S. 54 each day.

"Traffic conditions can be affected by a number of factors: traffic volume, highway access, interchange and ramp spacing, traffic operations, and the development of the surrounding area," said J.B. Wilson, the public information officer for KDOT District 5.
Sedgwick County Commissioner Stephanie Wise says a plan to expand West Kellogg is ready, but is waiting on funding from state, federal and local sources.
"We are all just waiting for the project of West Kellogg, and ultimately it comes down to funding," she said.
