A man from York is dead after drowning in the Broad River near Blacksburg, South Carolina.
It happened Saturday afternoon, according to Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler. The drowning was reported near the Duke Energy hydroelectric dam on Ninety-Nine Island Road.
The coroner's office identified the victim as 38-year-old John Daniel Ratcliffe of York, South Carolina.
Fowler said a friend found Ratcliffe face down in three feet of water. He couldn't be resuscitated by emergency medical services, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a statement from the coroner's office, friends at the scene said Ratcliffe couldn't swim.
Fowler said an autopsy will be performed as part of the investigation into the incident.
