Louisville Metro Police is investigating after a man's body was recovered from a lake in Long Run Park July 29, spokesperson Dwight Mitchell confirmed.
Anchorage Middletown Fire and EMS Deputy Chief Kent Kruer said officials responded to a reported possible drowning at the park at around 12:45 p.m. July 29. After more than three hours of searching, Kruer said the rescue has turned into a "recovery mission."
A witness told officials they saw the man fall off his kayak into the water and attempted to help him but was unsuccessful, Kruer said. By the time emergency crews arrived at the scene, the man was no longer visible in the water.
Louisville Fire and Rescue also responded to the scene, and at least nine swimmers were in the water conducting dive operations and using sonar.
In an update sent just after 9 p.m., Mitchell confirmed its Dive Team recovered the man's body at around 7:45 p.m. July 29.
"Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the death," Mitchell said. "LMPD extends its appreciation to the numerous first responders and partner agencies who assisted during this tragic incident."
LMPD's Homicide Unit is conducting a death investigation, which is a standard procedure, Mitchell said.
