Travellers in Germany took 169 million domestic trips in 2025, a 3.9% rise over 2024 and 5% higher than in 2019, which was before the coronavirus started, the Federal Statistics Office reported on Monday

The number of trips abroad however declined to 105 million for an 8.3% decline over 2024. This amounted to a 5.4% over pre-Covid's 2019 abroad travel.

Italy was the most popular destination ahead of Austria, Spain, France and the Netherlands. These countries have been the favourite destinations for travellers from Germany over the last 10 years, though the order occasionally changes.

The data office also said that people from Germany took fewer multi-day trips last year than in the year before.

The number of private trips, up 6.2%, was well above the figures from the pre-Covid year 2019. For the 41 million business trips, the level from before the pandemic was still narrowly missed by 0.2% despite significant increases.

The most popular means of transport for trips remained the car with a share of 60.2%. It was followed by rail (19.2%) and aeroplane (15.2%).
