A pet toy made from recycled material. A grooming product promoted as plant-based. An accessory carrying a prominent sustainability message.
Then the customer turns it over and finds a pack made from several materials, complete with a plastic window, an adhesive label and disposal instructions that give little indication of what can actually be recycled.
For brands trying to improve the environmental performance of their products, packaging can create an awkward credibility gap. The product and the pack may have been developed separately, but the customer encounters them as a single purchase.
That makes the packaging part of the sustainability story, whether the brand intends it to be or not.
Environmental claims now appear across almost every consumer category. Pet products are no exception, with recycled content, natural materials, plant-based components and reduced-impact alternatives increasingly used as selling points.
There is nothing inherently misleading about a claim applying to only one part of a product. A toy might contain recycled fibre while its packaging is made from something entirely different.
The difficulty comes when the overall presentation makes that distinction hard to see.
If the front of the pack strongly suggests environmental progress but the packaging itself is unnecessarily complex or difficult to dispose of, customers may reasonably question how far that thinking has gone.
For packaging teams, the challenge is therefore not only to improve the pack itself. It is also to make clear which environmental claims apply to the product, which apply to the packaging and which apply to both.
Calling packaging "plastic", "paper" or "card" rarely tells the whole end-of-life story.
Windows, labels, coatings, adhesives, closures and other components can all affect how a package behaves within a recycling process.
RecyClass, for example, assesses packaging features such as labels, adhesives and caps when considering compatibility with plastic recycling streams. This matters because a component that works perfectly well for branding, protection or merchandising can still complicate sorting or reprocessing.
Many packs have to perform several jobs at once. They need to protect the product, present information, carry branding, survive transport and sometimes provide a clear view of what is inside.
Those requirements can lead to designs that combine several materials for perfectly understandable reasons. The problem comes when recyclability is judged only by the dominant material while the rest of the construction is ignored.
This does not mean that every package should be forced into a single-material format regardless of performance. Product protection remains essential. But it does mean that the complete design needs to be considered when recyclability claims are made.
Where the same function can be achieved with fewer materials or components that are more compatible with an established recycling stream, simplification deserves serious consideration.
A material switch is visible. Using less packaging often is not.
That can make substitution an attractive sustainability story. Plastic becomes paper, virgin material becomes recycled content, or one polymer is replaced by another.
Sometimes that produces a genuine improvement. But it should not prevent a more basic question from being asked: does the product need this much packaging in the first place?
Packaging has important functions, and simply removing material can be counterproductive if it leads to damage, contamination or higher return rates. The aim should not be reduction regardless of consequence.
Could the pack be smaller? Could an insert disappear? Does the product need both an outer carton and an internal support? Could two components become one?
These questions sit alongside recyclability rather than competing with it.
That direction is also reflected in European packaging policy. The EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation combines recyclability requirements with measures intended to reduce unnecessary packaging, increase the use of recycled material and encourage reuse.
The message for packaging teams is that no single environmental attribute can carry the entire sustainability case.
A package can be designed for recycling and still fail at the final step if nobody knows what to do with it.
The problem becomes obvious when disposal depends on a sequence of instructions: remove a window, peel off a label, separate a component and then check whether a particular material is collected locally.
Each additional action asks more of the customer.
That does not automatically make the design poor. Some separation may be unavoidable. But if correct disposal requires detailed knowledge of materials or local waste infrastructure, the communication challenge should be recognised early in the design process.
Compostable packaging illustrates the same point particularly well.
"Compostable" does not by itself tell somebody whether the material belongs in a home composter, an industrial composting system or general waste where suitable collection is unavailable. WRAP's guidance on compostable plastic packaging stresses the importance of choosing appropriate applications, using clear labelling and considering the waste infrastructure available.
That is a much more useful approach than treating an environmental label as the end of the conversation.
Good disposal information should tell the customer what part of the pack the instruction applies to, whether anything needs to be separated and what disposal route is realistically available.
If that takes a paragraph to explain, the design itself may deserve another look.
The pet market offers a useful example because several sustainability messages can appear within a single purchase.
A pet toy might contain recycled polyester. Its backing card might contain recycled fibre. The packaging might also be recyclable.
Those are three separate claims.
There is value in keeping them separate.
"Toy contains recycled polyester" tells the customer something specific about the product.
"Card backing can be recycled where appropriate collection is available" says something different about the packaging.
A broad claim such as "eco-friendly" may sound stronger, but it gives the customer much less useful information.
Precise language also gives companies room to talk about genuine improvements without implying that every environmental issue surrounding the product has been solved.
That matters when a pack contains unavoidable compromises. A business does not need to pretend those compromises do not exist. Explaining exactly what has changed can make the improvement more credible.
The credibility gap works both ways.
Packaging that has been simplified, uses material efficiently and gives realistic disposal instructions can strengthen the environmental story of the product inside.
The improvement does not have to be dramatic.
Removing a redundant component, reducing material, choosing a construction that works better with an established recycling stream or replacing vague disposal language with clearer instructions can all make the pack easier to understand and deal with after use.
For packaging professionals, this may be the more useful way to think about environmental communication.
The aim is not to design packaging that looks sustainable.
It is to make the environmental message and the physical reality of the pack agree with each other.
Before an environmental claim reaches the front of a pack, there are some practical questions worth asking.
Could any material be removed without compromising the packaging's function?
Are labels, adhesives, windows and closures compatible with the intended recycling route?
Could a mixed-material construction be simplified?
Does the customer need to separate anything before disposal?
Is that instruction realistic in the markets where the product will be sold?
And does the environmental wording make clear whether it refers to the product, the packaging or both?
None of those questions requires packaging to be perfect.
They do require the sustainability message to survive contact with the actual pack.
A product promoted for its environmental credentials but wrapped in unnecessarily complicated packaging creates a credibility problem that can often be avoided at the design stage.
When the product, the pack and the claims made about them tell the same story, customers have far less work to do to understand what has genuinely improved.
