Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) was held by 54 hedge funds at the end of Q1 2026 in the Insider Monkey database, down from 64 in the previous quarter. That said, while the number of hedge fund holders decreased, their cumulative investment value increased from $1.1 billion in Q4 2025 to $1.58 billion in Q1 2026.
Cliff Asness' AQR Capital Management held the largest stake in Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) at the end of the first quarter, valued at almost $212 million.
Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) crushed Wall Street expectations in its Q2 2026 report on August 4, benefiting from the prolonged disruptions to crude supplies through the Strait of Hormuz that doubled its refining margins. As a result, the company's Q2 profit jumped almost fourfold to $5.14 billion, while revenue also increased by over 53%. If the global refining capacity remains constrained, Marathon could continue delivering these unusually high profits and cash flows.
The US refining sector has been a key winner from the US-Iran war as international buyers have been willing to pay more to lock down supplies. The country's fuel exports hit record highs this summer as it emerged as a key global supplier to fill supply gaps left by a shortage of oil from the Middle East. To make sure it doesn't miss out on the opportunity, Marathon has operated with its lowest level of unplanned downtime this decade, while its US Gulf Coast refineries ran at 100% utilization during the quarter.
Additionally, Marathon Petroleum has an approximate 64% ownership of MPLX, which further adds to its appeal. It provides the refining giant with significant exposure to a diversified midstream infrastructure business with relatively stable cash flows that can help offset the cyclicality of the refining business. The MLP has grown its shareholder returns every year since its formation in 2012 and should have no problem maintaining this momentum, since it has a number of expansion projects under construction that it expects to complete by the end of the decade. To ensure timely completion, MPLX increased its 2026 capital growth spending outlook by $500 million to $2.9 billion earlier this month.
Notably, Marathon's renewable diesel business was a standout performer in the last quarter, posting an adjusted core profit of $258 million versus a loss of $19 million in the year-ago period. While renewable fuels have been a drag on the earnings of US refiners for years, they have recently emerged as a more significant source of profits, as government biofuel mandates boost demand and higher diesel prices improve margins.
The strong recent results and solid growth prospects have helped Marathon Petroleum garner significant positive attention from Wall Street. On August 11, Mizuho upped its price objective on MPC by $20, while the analysts from Piper Sandler, Citi, Wells Fargo, and several others have also improved their respective outlooks on the stock over the last few days.
Investors need to stay mindful that the unusually high profits recently posted by US refiners were a result of extraordinary market conditions. If a peace deal is reached and disruptions ease down, refining margins could normalize quickly. Marathon Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:MPC) has already substantially outperformed the overall market with gains of over 121% since the beginning of 2026, so much of the recent optimism may already be reflected in its share price. As a result, even a modest decline in refining margins could trigger a significant valuation correction.
Marathon Petroleum's strong recent performance underscores its ability to capitalize on favorable market conditions, while its stake in MPLX and improving renewable fuels business provide additional sources of revenue and cash flow. However, investors should weigh the company's strong fundamentals and diversified cash flow streams against the risk of an eventual normalization of global refining margins.
