NEWTON, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A Newton man will spend up to nine years in prison following his conviction for a shooting that occurred after a break-up and injured two people.

On Wednesday, 49-year-old Tyraun Lamont Clark pleaded guilty in Catawba County Superior Court to discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling, first-degree burglary and a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

Court records show on Sept. 30, 2025, officers from Hickory Police Department responded to a report of a shooting at the Glenwood Commons apartment complex.

The district attorney's office says the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute between Clark and one of the two female victims. She told investigators that she had kicked Clark out of the apartment following their breakup, but he returned and assaulted her.

State will not seek death penalty against 85-year-old Newton man accused of fatally shooting business partner

Clark produced a firearm and fired multiple rounds into the floor of the third-floor apartment that traveled into a second-floor apartment occupied by a mother and three juvenile children.

The second victim was checking on the female when she observed Clark leave the apartment with a firearm. She told investigators that he fired multiple rounds into the ground of the breezeway of the complex.

Evidence collected at the scene corroborated statements by the victims.

Several of his charges were dropped in the plea, including five counts of discharging a firearm within enclosure to incite fear.

He was ordered to serve six-to-nine years in a North Carolina state prison.

Clark confessed to his actions when he was arrested and interviewed by Hickory PD investigators.

Tammie Johnson handled the case for HPD. Assistant District Attorney Kyle Smith prosecuted the matters for the State with assistance from Legal Assistant Amy Bishoff.
