WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCBD)— A local health fair is bringing Lowcountry families together while shining a light on the life-saving impact of organ donation. We Are Sharing Hope South Carolina held its fifth annual Community Health Fair in West Ashley in recognition of National Multicultural Donor Awareness Month.

The event featured nearly 50 vendors offering free health and wellness resources, including flu shots, school supplies, food and other services. Children also had a chance to enjoy a dedicated kids zone. Organ donation was a major focus of the event, with attendees invited to leave their handprints on a NASCAR race car as part of an effort to encourage more people to become donors.

Professional NASCAR driver Joey Gase took part in the event and shared why the cause is personal for him. Gase said his mother died unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm at 44 years old. His family chose to donate her organs, later learning that her donation helped save the lives of 66 people.

He says that experience continues to motivate him to use his platform to raise awareness about organ donation. The event also highlighted mental health, with local advocacy groups emphasizing the importance of community support and making resources accessible.

Organizers say the goal is to continue connecting people with resources while encouraging conversations that can make a lasting difference.
