Former mayor of Cuauhtémoc in Mexico City, Sandra Cuevas, an influential Mexican politician, is receiving a significant amount of hate online due to sharing her recovery from cosmetic procedures.

Cuevas, 40, posted the video on X over the weekend. The video shows Cuevas dressed in a white gown with a nasal splint, tape around her eyes, and numerous bandages on her face and body. It did not specify what procedures she underwent.

"I decided to take a necessary pause. Today I choose my health, my happiness, and a new beginning full of strength," Cuevas wrote.

The video follows a couple of days of rumors surrounding the condition of the politician following her previous post dated August 19th announcing her plans to go into surgery. "I'm going into surgery! God first, if all goes well, I'll see you in about 15 hours," she wrote back then.

According to the politician, this surgery is a part of the bigger process of changing her life.

"I knew I needed to change, so I decided to listen to my heart and do it in a big way. I started with small physical changes that were harming my health. The second step will be to study a new career, and just like that, more changes until I find true happiness," she tweeted.

The politician has previously stated that she has breast implants and joked about criticism. "Ni modo que me las quite," she once stated, which translates to "It's not like I'm going to remove them."

Sandra Xantall Cuevas Nieves was born in Azcapotzalco, a borough in Mexico City. She graduated from the Universidad del Valle de México with a degree in international commerce.

Cuevas was the mayor of Cuauhtémoc, one of Mexico City's 16 boroughs, from October 2021 to March 2024. The politician held office as a member of a coalition consisting of the Party of the Democratic Revolution, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, and the National Action Party.

In February 2024, the Congress of Mexico City granted Cuevas leave to run for the Senate as part of a two-person slate of the Citizens' Movement party led by Alejandra Barrales. The slate took third place in the June 2024 vote, so Cuevas did not win a seat.

Since leaving the position, Cuevas has stayed in the spotlight without holding any office. She created a business portfolio as Sandra Cuevas Diamond Group. In January, she launched several projects: a restaurant, a candy shop, and a tequila brand, together with her new political initiative for May 2026.

"I've been very, very focused, working very hard, very intensely on my company, Sandra Cuevas Diamond Group," she said back then.

Now, Sandra Cuevas has not commented on how long she will take a break from politics to recover.
