AutoGuide recently had the chance to drive the 2027 Toyota Tundra. With its fresh mid-cycle styling update, upgraded cabin tech, and newly available off-road hardware, here are 5 reasons why the 2027 Toyota Tundra should be at the top of your full-size truck shopping list:
Grand Junction, Colo.- Toyota is broadening the 2027 Tundra lineup by doing that most unexpected of moves: going affordable. What isn't unexpected is that the brand's newest name, the overlanding Trailhunter trim, is arriving on the Tundra. Except it isn't a trim here: it's a package. While we don't have pricing yet, that should make it a markedly more approachable overlanding option than the comparative 4Runner and Tacoma.Along with detail changes outside, inside, and under the skin, the Tundra rolls into the new year comprehensively-but not dramatically-improved.
While Ford and Chevy often reserve their best cabin electronics and safety features for expensive upper-tier trims, Toyota made the massive 14.0-inch infotainment display standard across the entire 2027 Tundra lineup. Paired with a fast, customizable digital instrument cluster and a built-in Drive Recorder that eliminates the need for an aftermarket dashcam, the cabin tech is seamless. Furthermore, every model comes equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 4.0, providing significantly smoother, more natural operation for lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control than rival domestic systems.
Say goodbye to gear hunting. The Tundra's base 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 delivers a stout 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. If you upgrade to the i-FORCE MAX hybrid system, those numbers jump to a massive 437 hp and 586 lb-ft of low-end torque-with an optional performance package adding another 29 horses to the stable. Paired with a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission, the drivetrain delivers instant, smooth throttle response across all driving conditions without the unrefined gear shifts found in some Blue Oval trucks.
While factory-built overlanding rigs are often locked behind steep, top-tier price tags (like the 4Runner or Tacoma Trailhunter), Toyota is making overlanding accessible on the Tundra. The all-new Trailhunter package is offered directly on the value-focused SR5 trim. Outfitted with rugged Old Man Emu suspension for added ground clearance and wheel articulation, lightened steering for low-speed technical trail navigation, and protective hardware, the Tundra Trailhunter promises to be a significantly more affordable blank-canvas rig than anything offered by Ford or GM.
Toyota has pulled the curtain back on a mid-cycle refresh for the 2027 Tundra, introducing a sharper exterior design, an overhauled infotainment system, and an all-new factory overlanding package called the Trailhunter. The updates represent the first major cosmetic and technological revision to the full-size pickup platform since the current generation debuted. Penned by Toyota's CALTY Design Research center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the updated truck adopts a distinctly squared-off front geometry. Designers implemented a more vertical fascia profile, a new lower bumper treatment, and a rugged hexagonal grille texture that changes visual characteristics depending on the specific trim level.
The rowdy TRD Pro trim inherits heavy-duty internal-bypass Fox QS3 shocks tuned specifically for high-speed desert running. These manually adjustable dampers allow you to quickly soften or stiffen the ride depending on whether you're floating over deep sand or cruising down the highway.
For extreme trail runs, Toyota even offers its revolutionary IsoDynamic seats on the Tundra-which integrate independent air-over-oil shock absorbers directly into the front seatbacks to dampen body pogoing and keep drivers comfortably isolated over rough terrain.
Touchscreen overload can make managing drive modes on the trail a frustrating exercise in rival trucks. Toyota keeps things physical with its multi-level drive-mode dial.
