Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal disqualifies judge from election

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal ruled to disqualify Judge Steven Tureau from the 23rd Judicial District election set for Nov. 3.

Robert J. Snyder Jr., his opponent in the race, and Ruth W. Snyder, both of St. James Parish, challenged Tureau's candidacy over his tax filing extensions in recent years.

According to the disposition available through the web site, the court reversed the trial court's previous judgement on Tureau's qualification.

The court ordered the Louisiana Secretary of State to remove Tureau's name from the ballot, per the disposition.

An attorney representing Tureau told Baton Rouge television station WAFB they plan to appeal the decision.

Tureau has served as a judge since 2020 in the district court, which covers Ascension, Assumption and St. James parishes.

The Fifth Circuit, located in Gretna, is comprised of Jefferson, St. Charles, St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes.
