As far as marques go, Mitsubishi as an automotive manufacturer has been faltering as of late. That's actually a severe understatement, thanks to uninspired efforts like the Eclipse Cross, but there's hope on the horizon: The iconic Pajero name-known as the Montero in North America-is set to return as a true four-by-four, and we don't have long before it debuts.
September 2nd is only a few days away, and both Montero and 4x4 fans alike have reason to mark their calendars. This is the day when Mitsubishi will finally reveal the fifth-generation Montero SUV, adding to the nameplate's long-running saga of standing as the eclectic, offbeat alternative to stalwarts like the Toyota 4Runner.
Mitsubishi, in its teasers and very limited press details, has at least noted that the Montero will tout a ladder-frame chassis and the brand's Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) traction management setup. For what it's worth, this is the same kit they use globally in trucks like the Triton pickup.
Supposedly, the new Montero will also offer the Super Select 4WD-II transfer case, which means there should be a proper low-range setup for when the going gets tough. Mitsubishi will supposedly also offer a real off-road-focused variant of the Montero, and a hybrid variant is in the cards as well.
Unfortunately, we will likely have to wait until 2030 or so for the Montero to materialize, which leaves enough time for the brand to fully develop the new model so that it isn't a dud upon release. As for what it looks like? Hopefully we'll know on September 2nd.
