Henkel's packaging laboratory in Shanghai, China, has received accreditation to conduct recognised recyclability checks for paper-based packaging for customers in the Asia-Pacific region.

The approval followed an official audit by the cyclos-HTP Institute (CHI).

It allows the site to perform EU paper packaging recyclability testing and issue externally recognised assessment reports accepted in the EU.

The move expands Henkel's regional support for packaging producers, converters and brand owners facing the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and broader recyclability requirements.

The Shanghai site now forms part of Henkel's wider Packaging Recyclab network, which also includes a facility in Düsseldorf, Germany.

The laboratories are integrated into Henkel's global Inspiration Center set-up and are used to examine and refine packaging options from early development to recyclability review.

The Shanghai facility currently uses two European test methods for paper packaging recyclability: CEPI/4evergreen and CHI.

Henkel supplies industrial adhesives across a range of commercial packaging applications and value-chain segments.

The Shanghai laboratory is currently centred on paper packaging.

Work is also in progress to introduce recyclability assessments for plastic packaging.

Over time, the site is expected to extend its testing coverage to additional export packaging types.

In addition to testing, the facility collects performance data on packaging structures, contributes to design-for-recyclability work and shares those findings with the broader industry.

Henkel Asia Pacific packaging adhesives vice-president Alejandro Schoenhoff said: "PPWR will reshape the competitive landscape of the packaging industry. CHI's accreditation of the Packaging Recyclab in Shanghai marks an important milestone in bringing Europe's authoritative recyclability assessment and testing capabilities closer to customers in Asia-Pacific.

"It underscores Henkel's long-term commitment to China and the wider region, and it represents another significant step in helping local businesses meet stringent global market entry requirements."
