A family from England sold nearly everything they owned and moved to Thailand with three children, two dogs and just five suitcases, to see if they could find a happier life.

Jasmine Scarr, 34, and her husband, Ross Scarr, 38, left Darlington in May. Their children, Jayden, 7, Johnson, 5, and Mali, 2, are now being homeschooled in the new country.

Before leaving England, the couple sold the house they had once expected to be their permanent family home. People valued the property at approximately $475,000.

The family now rents a four-bedroom villa on a Thai island for about $950 per month, including utilities. The property has a private swimming pool, garden and veranda overlooking the jungle.

Ross, a welding engineer, previously worked shifts about two hours from the family's home. Jasmine said the schedule limited the time they could all spend together and eventually began affecting her husband's mental health.

Their days now revolve around the children. Jasmine, who works in business payroll, said she completes her work after the children go to bed. Thailand is six hours ahead of the United Kingdom, allowing her to spend the daytime with her family.

Jasmine removed Jayden and Johnson from their school in March so she could homeschool them abroad. The boys spend at least two hours after breakfast studying math, English and other subjects.

She also teaches Mali basic numbers and colors. Family trips have become part of the children's education, with visits to temples creating opportunities to discuss Thai culture. The two boys have also joined a soccer team, and Jasmine hopes they will eventually learn the Thai language.

Jasmine first visited Thailand as a teenager and had always wanted to return. Although she admitted that selling their home and possessions was intimidating, she now considers the move the right decision for her family.

The couple has not made firm plans beyond the next year. However, Jasmine said they would like to remain in Thailand and may eventually open a business there.
