U.S. News & World Report has identified the top 10 most dangerous places in the U.S. for 2026, and three Louisiana cities were named.
The site determined the most dangerous cities based on violent and property crime rates from Applied Geographical Solutions (AGS) CrimeRisk, which provides crime indexes using FBI Uniform Crime Reports and available local data.
On average in the U.S., the violent crime rate is 359 and the property crime rate is 1,760 per 100,000 people, according to USAFacts. The most dangerous cities report crime rates above the national average.
Alexandria, Louisiana ranked fifth on U.S. News & World Report's list of the most dangerous place in the U.S. for 2026. Alexandria has a violent crime rate of 7.985 (798.5 per 100,000) and a property crime rate of 23.56 per 1,000 residents (2,356 per 100,000), according to CrimeGrade.org.
CrimeGrade.org's sources data from individual crime reports from FBI data, state criminal justice departments and local law enforcement agencies. In order to make the dataset more reliable, the organization has a standardization process to weed out inconsistent or irrelevant reports.
New Orleans, Louisiana is the sixth most dangerous place in the U.S. for 2026, according to U.S. News & World Report. The city of New Orleans has a violent crime rate of 5.736 (573.6 per 100,000) and a property crime rate of 30.56 per 1,000 residents (3,056 per 100,000), according to CrimeGrade.org.
On U.S. News & World Report's list, Monroe, Louisiana is the eighth most dangerous place in the U.S. for 2026. This city has a violent crime rate of 7.286 (728.6 per 100,000) and a property crime rate of 23.91 per 1,000 residents (2,391 per 100,000), according to CrimeGrade.org.
