WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Highway Patrol designated a woman an honorary trooper on Friday for her bravery and compassion while helping someone in distress.
On March 3, 2025, Autumn Copridge was driving along Interstate 135 when she noticed someone experiencing a mental crisis. Instead of driving past, she pulled over to offer assistance.
Copridge said that although the person was initially hesitant, she comforted them with a hug, convincing them to take a step back from the ledge.
But when authorities arrived, the situation took a turn for the worse.

"But then he saw the cops get on the highway and he turned around and tried to jump again and so his whole body, except for one leg, was over and I just ran up and grabbed him," Copridge said. "I don't know how I did it, but I grabbed him and threw my weight backwards and just held him until they got there."
Copridge said she acted without stopping to think about the risks.
"I was just telling them like, 'I've been there,'" she said. "'It's not really what you need to do. It's just a permanent solution for a temporary problem, and no matter how bad it is, the storm doesn't really last forever.'"
Troopers said what was especially commendable about Copridge's actions was her humility. Instead of lingering for recognition or gratitude, once law enforcement had the situation under control, she quietly went on her way.
