ATLANTIC BEACH, Long Island (PIX11) -  The Sun & Surf Beach Club is partially open after a tornado ripped through the popular beach club and left major damage.

Some families have made it a summer staple for generations.

On August 20th, a waterspout off the shore of Atlantic Beach made landfall and became an EF-1 tornado with 97 mph winds, according to the National Weather Service.

It tore through the parking lot, before making a path through a line of cabanas. About 40 vehicles were damaged.

Dozens of cabanas lost roofs, and debris was left scattered in its wake. National Weather Service inspectors say it's remarkable that no one was seriously injured.

The beach club will remain partially open the last weekend of August as well as Saturday through Monday Labor Day weekend.

There's also a possibility it will remain open for an additional week. In the meantime, the beach club will be closed during the week so crews can continue to rebuild. Members will have access to Silver Point through mid-September.
