Two people were found dead Sunday afternoon near White Gulch Beach in Marin County, after they left in a canoe around midnight on Saturday to view bioluminescence, authorities said.
The pair was reported missing Sunday morning when they did not return as planned, leading to an air and water search-and-rescue operation. First responders found their bodies at about 1:30 p.m., according to the Marin County Fire Department. Both were wearing life vests, the fire department added.
Authorities did not release further information about them, adding that the causes of their deaths are under investigation.
Bioluminescence is a spectacular phenomenon that is occasionally visible along the California coast and bays. It occurs when tiny organisms in an algae bloom, called dinoflagellates, are agitated. They then causes emit flashes of light. The peak viewing season for Tomales Bay is generally June to October; nights with limited moonlight are best.
