Boone County is accepting applications for a new public defender after Chief Judge Brendan A. Maher announced a vacancy created by the appointment of current Public Defender Kathryn J. Cross to an associate judge position.
Cross is scheduled to be sworn in Sept. 2, according to a community announcement. Applications for the public defender position must be received by 5 p.m. Sept. 15, and the selection will be made by the circuit judges of the 17th Judicial Circuit.
The public defender's office represents indigent clients in felony, misdemeanor, traffic, juvenile delinquency and juvenile abuse and neglect cases. The office also provides representation for adults and juveniles participating in problem-solving court programs.
The position oversees an office that currently includes four full-time assistant public defenders and three office assistants.
Under Illinois law, the Boone County public defender is responsible for managing office operations and supervising attorneys and support staff.
The public defender establishes office policies, prepares department budgets and directs the work of assistant public defenders. The position also requires maintaining working relationships with court personnel, public officials, members of the bar and the public.
Applicants must be able to oversee the delivery of legal services while ensuring compliance with professional responsibility standards.

Candidates must be licensed to practice law in Illinois, be in good standing with the Illinois Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission and have at least five years of experience providing criminal legal services, including felony trial work.
The announcement states candidates should demonstrate administrative skills, knowledge of criminal law and the ability to train and develop legal professionals. Experience with problem-solving court protocols and procedures is preferred, according to the announcement.
The starting salary for the position is $205,486.18 annually, with Boone County benefits included.
The position is full time, and the public defender may not engage in private legal practice.
