Tropical Depression 5 is now Tropical Storm Edouard, the fifth named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.
The depression was upgraded to a Tropical Storm in the 7 p.m. advisory. The National Hurricane Center's Monday morning Tropical Storm Warnings remain in effect for parts of the upper Texas and southwestern Louisiana coasts.
The Storm is still expected to make landfall Tuesday evening.
The next National Hurricane Center update with details about the storm will come at 10 p.m.
As of 1 p.m. Monday, then-Tropical Depression 5 was located about 230 miles from Port Arthur, Texas, where it's expected to make landfall within the next 36 hours. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 35 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).
The system originated in the northeastern Gulf near the Florida Panhandle late last week as a weak low-pressure area. On Sunday, forecasters said the storm was becoming increasingly better organized and was expected to move westward. It's expected to become Tropical Storm Edouard within the next 36 hours.
By early Monday morning, NWS forecasters said the system had a 70 percent chance of depression or storm formation. A Tropical Storm Warning was issued for portions of the upper Texas and southwestern Louisiana coasts.
Forecasters anticipate tropical storm conditions will reach the upper Texas coast on Tuesday. Heavy rainfall and localized flash flooding remain the main concern for the Houston area.
As of Monday afternoon, the NHC was predicting 3 to 6 inches of rainfall for parts of the upper Texas coast inland through east-central Texas, with maximum totals of nine inches possible.
The heaviest rainfall is expected to hit Tuesday morning through the evening, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms lasting through Wednesday night, according to the NWS Houston-Galveston office.
"This rainfall could produce flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas," forecasters wrote in their outlook.
Along the coast, the storm brings the risk of high tides, rough surf and surge-related coastal flooding. Tropical storm-strength wind gusts could hit in the eastern coastal waters and in Chambers County.

So far in 2026, four named storms have formed in the Atlantic.
Most recently, Tropical Storm Dolly was named on Aug. 27, bringing locally heavy rainfall to the Greater Antilles and South Florida. Before Dolly, Tropical Storm Cristobal was named in mid-August, but remained over open water.
Tropical Storm Bertha formed in the Gulf of Mexico on July 20, bringing scattered showers and wind gusts to the Houston area. Tropical Storm Arthur formed near the middle Texas coast on June 17, bringing threats of coastal flooding, heavy rain and rip currents to the state's Gulf Coast.
