A 51-year-old man died Monday after stepping off a ledge at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on the campus of the University of Florida.

University of Florida Police Department Information Officer Kailey Tedjeske confirmed in an email to The Sun that officers responded to reports of an individual standing on a concrete support beam in the stadium.

According to the report, officers tried to establish communication with the man. Tedjeske said officers encouraged the man to walk toward them.

However, the man stepped off the ledge and suffered fatal injuries, despite life-saving measures taken by officers.

The Sun reports the man was not affiliated with the university. WCJB reports officials believe the man was likely homeless.
