Mississippi has long been one of President Donald Trump's strongest states. But new polling shows support for the president has weakened since the start of his second term.
His approval has been stuck at a record low nationally for three weeks. In Mississippi, a rising disapproval rating means his numbers have been underwater for the last two months, and the gap is getting wider.
Only one in three Americans supports Trump, according to the most recent Reuters/Ipsos polls. The newest data, released Monday, Aug. 31, showed a 33% approval rating.
It was the lowest he's seen from that tracking tool since he returned to the White House in January 2025. It matches his worst approval rating in his first term, which was in December 2017.
Nationally, the Iran war, which has continued for six months, has low support. Only 36% of Americans approved of it.
Gas prices have climbed by about a dollar per gallon compared to last year across the U.S. as a result of the conflict. In Mississippi, gas prices were $2.71 this time in 2025 and are $3.64 as of Sept. 1, according to AAA.
The cost of living has become a deeply damaging issue for the president, as 71% of Americans, including four in 10 Republicans, said they disapproved of how Trump has handled the cost of living in the United States.
Trump has a 45% approval rating in Mississippi, according to Aug. 31 polling data from Civiqs. That's the lowest ever for the state.
His disapproval rating is 49%, which is also the highest for both terms. About 6% neither approve nor disapprove.
Trump started this term in 2025 with about a 56% approval rating in the Magnolia State. About 41% disapproved. Both groups basically mirrored each other for most of his second term, inching closer and closer together over time.

Since April, Mississippi voters have been almost evenly split on Trump. But in early June, his disapproval rating edged above his approval rating. His approval rating briefly tracked slightly higher, but they effectively stayed even until early July. Since then, approval has gradually declined while disapproval has increased. The rates still effectively mirror each other.
The state gave Trump an approval rating ranging from 52% to 56% in his first term, according to Civiqs. The disapproval rating ranged from about 41% to 45%.

The New York Times averages several other polls daily. Its data says Trump stands at 58% disapproval and 38% approval as of Sept. 1.
Silver Bulletin's poll shows 58% disapprove and 38.2% approve as of Sept. 1.
RealClearPolitics averages several other polls. Its data says Trump stands at 57% disapproval and 39.5% approval as of Aug. 31.
AP News' poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research says Trump's approval rating stands at 66% against and 33% for him as of July 23.
Fox News' poll says Trump stands at 61% against and 39% for as of July 17-20.
Reuters/Ipsos' poll says Trump stands at 63% disapproval, 33% approval as of Aug. 28-31.
Civiqs' national polling says Trump stands at 59% against and 36% for with 6% undecided as of Aug. 31.
Nationally, Trump's approval rating of 33% is also lower than former President Joe Biden's lowest approval rating of 35% in October 2024, according to Reuters/Ipsos tracking.
Mississippi, however, still likes Trump more than Biden.
Civiqs data shows that Mississippi's highest approval rating for Biden was about 40%. His max disapproval rate was 63%.

Favorability polling is different. It focuses on how voters feel about the person in general.
Civiqs' national favorability data shows 58% of voters have a negative outlook on the president. About 38% of people viewed him favorably as of Aug. 31. Mississippi polling has the same results.
YouGov's poll for The Economist says Trump stands at 58% unfavorable, 39.6% favorable, and 2.4% don't know as of Aug. 10.
