Retired attorney Jerry Shattuck will be the speaker at the next meeting of Altrusa International of Oak Ridge, set for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, 215 S. Illinois Ave.
Shattuck will share his experience as a student during the desegregation of Clinton High School. It was so eventful and significant that on the first day of school more than 80 media from all over the world had press there to cover it.
It was the first public school in the South to desegregate. Only the nearby federally operated Oak Ridge Schools desegregated earlier in the Southeast.
Jerry graduated from Clinton High School and Princeton University. He then received his law degree from the University of Tennessee and has practiced law until he recent retirement.
Jerry continued to serve his community by serving on the City Council, Clinton Utilities Board and many other areas of service.

Social time begins at 11:30 a.m. The buffet opens at 11:45 a.m. The lunch costs $20. A seat-only reservation costs $5. Cash or check only are accepted. Members of the public are welcome but must submit a reservation.
