Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Three people are dead and multiple people -- including three police officers -- were injured at a shooting Wednesday afternoon in downtown Minneapolis.

The shooter was one of those confirmed dead, officials said in a post on the city government's Facebook page. One other person died at the scene, and another died at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Six other people were taken to the hospital with injuries, officials said.

Reports of a shooting started at 4:36 p.m. at 15 E Grant St. -- an apartment complex called Loring Towers. Officers started arriving about three minutes later and entering the high-rise complex, where they "encountered victims and heard additional gunfire," the city said.

Police followed the sound to an upper floor, where they "encountered a haze that significantly limited their visibility." Three officers were injured, two by gunfire.

The three officers were taken to HCMC. One had an apparently non-life-threatening gunshoot wound to the leg, and another is undergoing surgery, the city said. The third was being evaluated for an apparently non-life-threatening injury.

Sgt. Garrett Parten said at a press conference late Wednesday that the shooting was "a tragic scene" that "has impacted numerous lives," CNN reported.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said that officers are working with other law enforcement agencies, including the Minnesota State Patrol, the St. Paul Police Department, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, the Metro Transit Police and the University of Minnesota Police Department.

Social media accounts for the St. Paul office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and FBI Director Kash Patel said agents from both agencies were at the scene Wednesday evening.

"Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in downtown Minneapolis this afternoon," Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said on social media about 6:30 p.m. "Minnesota is praying for our first responders."

Walz said earlier that his public safety team was responding to the shooting and that state officials were there to support local law enforcement.
