Cleanup efforts continued Wednesday across Mantua and parts of Deptford after storms swept through the area Tuesday night, damaging homes, downing trees and power lines, and forcing school closures.

One of the hardest-hit areas was the neighborhood around Ferndale Avenue in Mantua, where trees and branches littered streets and properties. A large tree fell onto a home, crashing through the structure and injuring a woman inside.

Steve Clark said his wife, Christina, was lying in bed when the tree struck their home.

"That's where my wife was when the ceiling fell on her," Clark said.

Clark said he rushed to help after realizing she was trapped inside.

"I'm standing here screaming to her, 'Are you trapped?'" he said.

The tree crushed through the house, trapping Christina in what remained of the bedroom.

"She started hollering back to me; I couldn't hear her that well. And then she said, 'I'm going to the bedroom window,' and I went around the house, and I pulled her out of the bedroom window and just carried her out front here," Clark said.

Clark said his wife suffered significant bruising and is recovering in the hospital but is expected to be fine.

Clark said his home will need to be demolished and rebuilt. He said he has nearby family members with whom he can stay while recovery efforts continue.

Their home was among dozens damaged by the storm. Residents across Mantua and Deptford reported widespread destruction, including fallen trees on homes, road closures and power outages.

"My son was supposed to start kindergarten this morning," one resident said.

According to an update from Mantua Township Mayor Bob Zimmerman, the storm significantly damaged the substation on New York Avenue, which created the majority of our power outages.

Approximately 1,200 homes were still without power Wednesday night in the Oak Valley section of Deptford Township.

Mantua schools were closed Wednesday because of extensive storm damage and power outages.

Mantua schools are expected to remain closed Thursday because of ongoing road closures and the number of families affected by the storm.

Businesses were also closed in some areas because electricity had not been restored, including the local post office.

"As you can see on the back of the house, it's quite a large tree," resident Mark said while showing damage to his property.

Neighbors described close calls and extensive losses. Alicia Lloyd said several trees fell on her property, including one that smashed through her 7-year-old son's bedroom window.

"We had water coming in from the roof. It was very traumatic," she said.
