Nepal is burying some of the hundreds of bodies recovered after devastating flash floods on August 26, 2026, but an image of an apparent mass burial circulating online is AI-generated. A visual analysis found it contains mistakes indicative of synthetic content, a finding corroborated by multiple detection tools.
"This is a heartbreaking scene on the ground in Nepal," reads part of a lengthy Korean-language Instagram post shared August 29.
It features an image depicting mourners gathered around a burial site in a flood-hit area, where dozens of bodies are draped in white cloth.
"The rows of white shrouds illustrate the weight of pain Nepal is enduring today," the post adds.
The late August flash flood -- caused by a high-altitude glacial collapse -- has become one of the deadliest disasters to hit the Himalayan nation in recent years ( archived link).
The huge wave of debris has killed more than 1,200 people and left more than 4,750 missing in Nepal and China's Tibet region, smashing towns, roads, bridges and multiple hydropower dams.
Hundreds of bodies were buried after DNA samples were taken so families can later retrieve them ( archived link).
The dead are traditionally cremated on funeral pyres in Hindu-majority Nepal, so the burials are viewed as long-term storage until families can retrieve them.
The image also appeared on Threads, X and YouTube across several countries including India, Sri Lanka and the Philippines.
However, it was generated using AI tools.
A reverse search on Google found a clearer and uncropped version of the image shared on Facebook on August 27 ( archived link).
A visual inspection found multiple errors.
One mourner appears to have six fingers on one hand while another has mangled fingers. Some onlookers also seem to fuse into each other.
And although the image is claimed to show a burial site, no pits are visible.
AFP ran the image on Google's SynthID detector, which indicated it was created using the company's AI tool ( archived link).
A separate analysis using the Hive Moderation detection tool also found a high probability that the image was "likely to contain AI-generated content" ( archived link).
AFP has debunked other misinformation circulating in the wake of the deadly Nepal floods.
