TINTON FALLS - Sixteen neglected dogs are receiving care at the Jersey Shore, and they need your help.

The small dogs were found severely matted and in need of "extensive" medical and grooming care at a home in Newark, Associated Humane Societies officials said Thursday. Several of the dogs are only months old.

The dogs' owner moved out of their home about a month ago and left the animals behind, neighbors said. However, officials say the condition the dogs were found in indicates that they were not being properly cared for, for much longer, AHS says, possibly even years.

The dogs were rescued and brought to AHS' Tinton Falls facility.

"The dogs are now safe and receiving care at Associated Humane Societies, where shelter staff are working around the clock to address their immediate medical and grooming needs," AHS says.

Officials say many of the dogs require sedated grooming due to the severity of their matting, while all also will receive veterinary examinations, vaccinations and any other necessary medical treatment.

"The condition these dogs arrived in is heartbreaking, but they are finally safe and surrounded by people who are committed to giving them the care and compassion they deserve," said Danielle Mania, COO of Associated Humane Societies, in a news release. "Our team is working tirelessly to help each one of them heal and prepare for the next chapter of their lives."

AHS is asking for the community's help to provide the needed veterinary care, grooming and rehabilitation.

Once the dogs are medically cleared, they will be available for adoption.
