A suspect was taken into custody Thursday night after a chase in a reportedly stolen SUV ended when California Highway Patrol officers executed a PIT maneuver on the 10 Freeway in the University Park area.
The white Mercedes SUV had been reported stolen in Lakewood. The chase began just before 10 p.m. on surface streets in South Los Angeles.
During the pursuit, the driver stopped at a red light and an officer was seen stepping out of their patrol car, sneaking around the side of the car, and throwing a spike strip underneath the suspect's SUV.
The driver then continued through the spike strip, causing significant damage to a rear tire.
At another red light, the suspect briefly got out of the vehicle. AIR7 captured the driver yelling at officers and waving his arms before he climbed back into the SUV and drove away.
The pursuit continued through the University Park area with the SUV traveling on at least one shredded tire. The tire eventually lost its remaining rubber, but the driver continued and entered the eastbound 10 Freeway with one wheel reduced to the rim.
The driver appeared to lose control of the vehicle several times before slowing on the freeway.
CHP officers then executed a PIT maneuver, causing the Mercedes to spin and come to a stop on the eastbound 10 Freeway near the 110 interchange in the University Park area.
The rear hatch flew open during the maneuver, and clothing spilled onto the roadway.
After stopping, the suspect got out of the SUV but did not comply with officers' commands and returned to the driver's seat as officers approached.
One officer shattered the passenger-side window while several others moved in from the driver's side.
Officers eventually pulled the suspect from the vehicle and took him into custody, bringing the chase to an end.
