Presque Isle State Park closure extends to Labor Day weekend
Labor Day weekend typically draws tens of thousands of people per day to Presque Isle State Park.
This year, they might only make it onto the beaches the final day.
The state park and its Tom Ridge Environmental Center, 301 Peninsula Drive, didn't open for the day Sept. 3 after a powerful storm moved through the Erie area earlier, downing trees and knocking out power. The Ridge Center's electricity was restored and it reopened Sept. 4 but the park remained closed due to storm damage.
The severe storm, with high winds and heavy rain, hit the Erie area early on Sept. 3. Numerous trees and power lines were down throughout the park, creating an unsafe environment, Presque Isle officials said that day.
Maintenance crews from Presque Isle and other western Pennsylvania state parks began working in an effort to reopen the peninsula for the holiday weekend. The park remained without power Sept. 4 and crews were cleaning up downed trees and preparing areas for power pole and line repairs.
Presque Isle State Park was without electricity after a Sept. 3, 2026, storm knocked down utility poles and power lines. This damage occurred in the park's marina area.
Officials said it is anticipated that Presque Isle State Park will be closed through Sunday, Sept. 6. The Labor Day holiday is Monday, Sept. 7.

In addition to vehicles and pedestrians, the park closure also prohibits access by bicycle, boat beaching and mooring, officials said Sept. 4.

The Ridge Center and Erie Bluffs State Park, a part of the Presque Isle complex, were to be open to visitors for the holiday weekend, officials said.
