Police have released body cam footage of a Simi Valley pursuit that ended with the suspect being shot and killed by officers as the deadly incident remains under investigation.
The July 21 incident began around 8:15 a.m. when Simi Valley police responded to a domestic violence call at a home on the 2500 block of Dusan Avenue.
The suspect, Nicholas Thompson, 37, had fled the scene by the time officers arrived.
Body cam footage showed an officer asking his family what they were arguing about earlier that day and a woman said, "We went to Vegas. He lost all of our money. He's on something."
The suspect's father was also seen with a bloody injury on his forearm.
Family members told police that Thompson was armed and had threatened to "shoot it out" with officers if they were called.
Following an investigation, police said they had probable cause to arrest him for domestic battery and elder abuse.
Police began searching the area for Thompson. His car and license plate information was entered into Flock, an automated license plate reading system. Several hours later, a Flock camera spotted Thompson's pickup truck and alerted authorities.
A motor officer spotted the truck and tried to pull him over, but he refused to yield, leading police on a pursuit through the freeway and surface streets of Simi Valley.
Thompson eventually returned to his family's neighborhood where additional officers awaited him.
Witness video showed his pickup truck speeding through residential streets at around 1:45 p.m. He circles the streets and passes his family's home twice.
On his third time around, police claimed he drove his truck in the direct line of an officer who opened fire at the vehicle.
Seconds later, Thompson's truck crashes into a parked, but unoccupied, police motorcycle before colliding with a parked RV on a neighbor's driveway. Police said his truck rolled out of the driveway and then collided with a responding patrol car.
Officers quickly surrounded Thompson's truck and fired several shots at the truck before ordering him to surrender and show his hands, but he doesn't answer.
When a SWAT team arrives, they eventually pull his body from the truck and begin administering CPR, however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police later confirmed that Thompson was not armed when officers fatally shot him.
No officers were injured during the ordeal. The deadly shooting will be investigated by the California Department of Justice.
"The Simi Valley Police Department continues to cooperate fully with the California Department of Justice and is providing all necessary information, evidence, and resources to support a thorough, objective, and independent review," a statement from the police department said.
