Many of us have long given up hope of a government stimulus check or a tariff rebate, but some people keep waiting for the Trump Administration to deliver. And their optimism is not totally random.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of tariff-funded payments to Americans, sometimes referred to as "tariff dividend" checks. CNBC reported July 27 that Trump has backed the idea of payments of at least $2,000 per person for working-class American families, but the plan has not become an approved federal payment program.
So is some federal payment arriving in your bank account in August? The short answer: No new federal stimulus check has been approved for August 2026. The IRS says the first, second and third pandemic-era Economic Impact Payments have all been issued, and its old "Get My Payment" tool is no longer available for checking stimulus status.
No. As of the end of July, there is no newly approved nationwide federal stimulus check scheduled for August 2026.
Congress has not passed a new stimulus payment law, and the IRS has not announced a fourth round of Economic Impact Payments. The IRS page for Economic Impact Payments is now marked as historical content and says all first, second and third payments were issued.
That means any viral claims you might receive about automatic August direct deposits, new IRS stimulus checks or guaranteed $2,000 payments should be treated carefully unless they point to an official government source.
The current buzz centers on Trump's proposed "tariff dividend," an idea that would use tariff revenue to send money back to some Americans.
Trump first raised the idea in Truth Social posts in November 2025. Trump economic adviser Kevin Hassett later said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that "in the new year, the president will bring forth a proposal to Congress to make that happen." Trump also told NBC News in February that he was looking into dividend checks "very seriously," adding, "I haven't made the commitment yet, but I may make the commitment."
That is the key distinction: a proposal is not a payment. No approved tariff dividend check is currently being sent to consumers.
There are no official eligibility rules for a Trump tariff dividend check because no such federal payment program has been enacted.
However, Trump described the idea as aimed at working-class American families, but any real payment would likely need congressional approval and specific rules covering income limits, dependents, filing status and how the money would be distributed.
Some Democratic lawmakers have also introduced tariff-related rebate proposals. Rep. Henry Cuellar introduced the American Consumer Tariff Rebate Act, calling for more than $230 billion in one-time payments, while Sen. Martin Heinrich introduced a similar measure in the Senate.
Some businesses and importers may be eligible for refunds tied to tariffs, but that does not mean regular consumers are getting direct checks.
U.S. businesses are being refunded billions after the Supreme Court's Feb. 20, 2026, decision involving tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. According to reports, U.S. Customs and Border Protection may need to return about $166 billion to businesses and importers.
Consumers who paid higher prices at stores, however, are not receiving direct payouts through that business refund process.
If you are waiting on a regular tax refund, that is different from a stimulus check or tariff dividend.
Taxpayers can use the IRS "Where's My Refund?" tool for regular federal tax refund updates. The IRS says its old "Get My Payment" stimulus tool is no longer available because the pandemic-era Economic Impact Payment program has ended.
There is no approved federal stimulus check for August 2026, no official IRS payment schedule for a fourth stimulus check and no enacted Trump tariff dividend program. The real story is that tariff refund and rebate proposals are generating political attention, but consumers should not expect money unless Congress passes a law and federal agencies announce payment details.
