It doesn't get much better than the Canton-Massillon area in terms of house hunting, a new report shows.
Realtor.com and the Wall Street Journal released their annual summer housing market rankings. Realtor.com noted that the market is still expected to outperform last year despite some headwinds. Home sales and prices are both expected to tick higher, and rents are expected to fall.
In the report, Realtor.com evaluated the 200 most populous U.S. metropolitan areas using housing market conditions and broader measures of economic health and livability data. Each market is ranked on a scale up to 100 and the overall result is based on the weighted sum.
The majority of the top cities came from the Midwest or Northeast, with three of the top four all coming from the Midwest. Sellers are in the driver's seat in the Midwest as demand outpaces supply. These markets have affordable home prices relative to local incomes, tight inventory, low climate risk, and labor markets that have proved resilient.
The real estate site noted that Midwest cities "are less dependent on in-migration to sustain buyer activity, which makes the alignment between local incomes and home prices all the more important."
Peoria, Illinois, Akron, Youngstown-Warren, Canton-Massillon, and Rockford, Illinois, all posted household incomes between 5.4% and 55.2% above the recommended level for homebuying, the report said.
"It is no wonder these markets are in high demand: homes spend just over a month on the market, roughly three weeks less than the national norm," the report said.

In the rankings, the South Bend-Mishawaka region in Indiana and Michigan holds the top spot for the third consecutive quarter. Not far below was Canton-Massillon at fourth place with median home listings at $251,000. Here are the other top markets this summer:
