A three-month-old girl has died while camping in woodland with her family, police have confirmed.

Emergency services were called to land off Strawberry Lane, near Cheslyn Hay, Staffordshire, at 08:45 BST on Saturday, to a report of a child in cardiac arrest.

An air ambulance was sent to the scene but the child was pronounced dead by paramedics a short time later, Staffordshire Police said.

"While the investigation remains at an early stage, this is an isolated incident," Det Insp Katie Gregory said. "The death is being treated as unexplained at this time."

People living in the close-knit community, a village of around 7,000 people, have been left shocked by the child's death.

The area is not an official camping site but locals said teenagers would often fish in two pools there and camp overnight.

The nature trail is also popular with dog walkers and runners.

A police cordon remained in place in the woodland on Sunday, and officers were in the area carrying out inquiries and providing reassurance.

A bunch of roses was also left nearby, in tribute to the little girl.

Councillor Robert Duncan said the community was devastated. He also urged residents to "avoid speculation and allow the family and responders the privacy and respect they deserve".

The scene of the tragedy was described as "hidden away" from the main woodland in the Wyrley and Essington Branch Canal Local Nature Reserve.

The cordon surrounds the scene, which is close to the fishing lake, and two camping tents - one of which is white with a navy blue trim - have been pitched.

Hundreds of residents have paid tribute on social media, with one saying: "Heartbreaking news, our thoughts and prayers are with family and friends at this very sad time."

"May it bring a tiny bit of comfort in knowing villagers care and are saddened by the news."

The Superintendent of the Cannock Chase Methodist Church Circuit, Rev Samantha Hagerman, said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with family, friends and emergency services affected by the incident near Cheslyn Hay yesterday."
